HDR monitors with full array backlights contain thousands of high-brightness LEDs that require a lot of power, and thus produce a significant amount of heat. ROG have implemented a Smart Fan Control technology that’s been derived from other tried-and-tested ASUS ROG products. Smart fan control dials in the exact rotational speed needed to maintain ideal thermals without overdoing it and causing unnecessary noise.

With exclusive ASUS Aura Sync lighting technology, Swift PG35VQ provides ambient lighting that can be synchronized with other Aura Sync-enabled components and peripherals. The PG35VQ has two lighting systems: the rear side ROG logo that is Aura Sync RGB-infused, and lighting system in the base of the stand that projects an ROG logo onto the desk below.

    -200 Hz
    -G-Sync Ultimate
    -HDR/10-bit color @ 144 Hz
-FALD backlighting noticeable in certain desktop situations and loading screens. I haven’t noticed it during gameplay, and there is always the option to turn this feature off if it bothers you.
-Windows 10 HDR support is still suspect
I held off on writing a review until they released a firmware update for the flickering and vertical banding you may have read about. I’m happy to say this issue was resolved, and if you’re buying this monitor today you won’t have to worry about it.

Obviously this monitor carries a hefty price, but it works exactly as advertised and it’s a (literal) game changer. The sheer scale, the contrast, the vibrancy, and even the color accuracy of your games has never been better. If it’s within your budget and you have been thinking about switching to ultrawide or future-proofing with HDR support, this is 100% the monitor to buy.

HDR makes a noticeable difference in picture quality for games that support it and once you see it, you can’t go back. The high refresh rate works well and is great to use especially when using SDR content where 8 vs 10 vs 12 color bit depth isn’t as important. The OSD controls for the monitor are a breeze to use thanks to the joystick on the back of the screen. My screen had no dead pixels and included firmware which fixes the flickering in certain content others have reported. The fan is very quiet. If you use headphones or desktop speakers you won’t notice it. My #1 gripe with this display is Asus’s Aura. If you have it enabled, the Aura RGB lighting will remain on when shutting down your computer and after the display goes into standby mode. The only way to get the RGB lighting to shut off when powering down your computer is to disable it, or power off the monitor using the power button on the back of the screen. Come on Asus, not everyone wants RGB lighting to stay on when the computer is off.

Light bloom around moving objects like the mouse cursor on the Windows desktop. This is, unfortunately, a side effect of the FALD backlight. I don’t think they’ll master this on any LCD type of display until micro-LED makes it to gaming monitors or OLED gaming monitors become more prolific. The light bloom can be significantly reduced or almost eliminated if you shut off the dimming backlight and leave Windows HD Color off when not using HDR content. If you use your computer for productivity tasks more than gaming, this IS NOT the display for you.

The cost. This is by far the most expensive piece of PC gaming tech I’ve ever purchased. Hopefully, the cost will go down as more HDR monitors are introduced to the market. I was able to afford this for my birthday, but just barely.

-HDR. Belongs at the top as this is the biggest difference between this monitor and the X34. And let me tell you it makes a huge difference. I have an HDR television and was always disappointed at getting a worse gaming experience on PC, the whole reason we spend our cash on PC gaming is that it looks so much better, right? (Well that and a host of other reasons) Well HDR is so noticeable it’s crazy. I’ll take a 1080p HDR monitor over a 4K Non-HDR any day. The colors, the brightness, the contrast, it’s just miles ahead of SDR.
    -Good User Interface
-Good color calibration out of the box
Everything else is just in the stats.
-I’ve been having a weird issue where the colors are way over-saturated when I turn off HDR in windows. It’s not a huge deal and just leaving HDR on seems to make the colors correct.
-It’s hard to wake up. Pressing the power button doesn’t wake it, it needs to have mouse and or keyboard input and even then it takes 5-10 seconds. A little annoying.
-FALD can look weird at times. Easily fixable by turning it off.
Yeah, I’d recommend it overall. Other people have issues with flickering, but I either am totally blind (I’d like to think I’m not) or don’t have the issue. I thought it’d be a step down going from IPS to VA but if it means 200 hz I’ll happily take that tradeoff as I do like to play both competitive and noncompetitive games. If you have an X34 and the cash to upgrade, this is your best bet. In my eyes, I haven’t questioned the decision to buy it at all since using it.
